If you're applying for a maths or maths-related degree in the UK, you may need to sit an admissions test — but which one? TMUA, STEP and MAT are the three main options, they're required by different universities, and they're very different in style. Here's how to tell them apart.
TMUA — Test of Mathematics for University Admission
Two multiple-choice papers testing mathematical knowledge and logical reasoning at roughly A-Level level, but under tight time pressure. Used by universities such as Cambridge, LSE, Warwick, Durham and Imperial. It's about speed and precision rather than fiendishly hard maths — and a strong score can lead to a reduced offer at some universities.
MAT — Mathematics Admissions Test
Used primarily by Oxford (and Imperial) for Maths and Computer Science courses. The MAT mixes multiple-choice questions with longer, written 'show your working' questions. It rewards clear mathematical communication as well as problem solving.
STEP — Sixth Term Examination Paper
The most demanding of the three. STEP consists of long, written questions requiring full, rigorous solutions, and is most associated with Cambridge (and Warwick) offers for Mathematics — often as a condition of the offer itself. STEP problems are deep and challenging by design.
Quick comparison
- Format: TMUA is fully multiple choice; MAT is mixed; STEP is fully written, long-form.
- Difficulty: TMUA (A-Level+, speed-focused) → MAT (harder problem solving) → STEP (the toughest).
- Who requires it: check each university course page — requirements change, so always confirm.
- Preparation style: TMUA rewards timed practice; MAT and STEP reward deep problem-solving practice over months.
“Don't guess which test you need — your university course page is the only source of truth, and it changes year to year.”
