How Canadian University Admissions Work: A Guide for Parents

If you've come from the UK, India or the US, Canadian university admissions can feel surprisingly simple — and surprisingly unforgiving. There's no single national exam and, for most programs, no standardised test. Instead, your child's high-school marks do almost all of the work. Here's how it fits together.

Marks come first

Almost every Canadian university admits on an average of senior academic courses. What changes by province is which grades are counted:

• Ontario: the top six Grade 12 U/M courses, including program prerequisites. Applications go through OUAC.
• British Columbia: Grade 11 and Grade 12 academic courses, with prerequisites for each program. UBC and SFU also look beyond grades.
• Alberta: 30-level courses such as Math 30-1, Chemistry 30 and ELA 30-1 — with diploma exams counting for 30% of each final mark.
• Quebec: students go to CEGEP after Secondary V, and universities admit on the CEGEP R-score (cote R).
• Other provinces: typically Grade 12 academic averages, with Grade 11 marks used for early offers.

Prerequisites can rule you out before your average does

A 95% average won't help if a required course is missing. Engineering, sciences, computer science and commerce all require specific senior maths and sciences. The most common mistake we see is a student dropping a harder course in Grade 11 — then discovering it was the prerequisite for the Grade 12 course their program requires.

Beyond grades: supplementary applications

• UBC asks every applicant for a personal profile — short written answers about experiences, achievements and goals.
• Waterloo uses an Admission Information Form, and its Math and Engineering faculties strongly consider CEMC contest results like the Euclid.
• Many competitive programs (business, health sciences, some engineering) add essays, video responses or interviews.
• McGill and the University of Toronto are largely grades-based for most programs, but specific programs have their own supplementary requirements.

What about AP and IB?

Many Canadian schools offer AP courses or the IB Diploma. Universities accept both, and strong results can earn first-year credit or advanced standing. IB students are usually admitted on predicted grades and confirmed on their final Diploma results.

Newcomer and international families

Families who move to Canada mid-way through high school should ask their school board early about credit equivalency for previous study — in Ontario this is handled through a process that grants credits for learning completed outside the province. Students applying to Canadian universities from abroad on a British, IB, American or Indian curriculum are assessed on their own qualifications, with requirements listed per country on each university's website.

A simple timeline

1. 1Grade 10: choose Grade 11 courses that keep engineering, science or business options open.
2. 2Grade 11: aim high — these marks power early offers in many provinces.
3. 3Summer before Grade 12: shortlist programs and check every prerequisite.
4. 4Autumn of Grade 12: applications open; most deadlines fall between December and February.
5. 5Winter–spring: early offers on Grade 11 and midterm marks; final marks confirm the offer.
