The Digital SAT Explained: How the Adaptive Format Works

The SAT has changed. It's now a shorter, digital, adaptive test taken on the College Board's Bluebook app — and understanding how it works is the first step to a strong score. Here's what students and parents need to know.

The Digital SAT has two sections — Reading & Writing, and Math — each still contributing to the familiar total out of 1600. What's new is how each section is delivered.

The adaptive module format

Each section is split into two modules. Everyone gets the same first module; your performance on it determines the difficulty of the second module. Do well on module one and you unlock a harder — and higher-scoring — module two.

• Module one: a mix of easier and harder questions, taken by everyone.
• Module two: adapts to your module-one performance, easier or harder.
• This means every question in module one carries real weight for your final score.

What each section tests

• Reading & Writing — short passages testing evidence, craft, grammar and vocabulary in context.
• Math — algebra, advanced maths, problem-solving and data analysis, with a built-in Desmos calculator available throughout.
