In New South Wales, the HSC is the final hurdle before university, and maths is one of the subjects that moves an ATAR the most. This guide explains how HSC maths is marked, how the courses differ, and where students tend to drop marks.

How your HSC mark is made

  • Each course mark is 50% school-based assessment and 50% the HSC exam.
  • School assessment marks are moderated against your school's exam results, so your rank in the cohort matters as much as the raw marks.
  • Results are reported in Bands 1 to 6 (E1 to E4 for Extension courses). Band 6 and E4 are the top bands.
  • UAC calculates your ATAR from your best 10 units, which must include at least 2 units of English.

Which maths course is right?

  • Mathematics Standard: practical maths for students who don't need calculus at university.
  • Mathematics Advanced: calculus, functions, trigonometry, exponentials and logs, statistics. Needed for most science, engineering and commerce degrees.
  • Extension 1: taken alongside Advanced. Adds proof by induction, vectors, further calculus and the binomial distribution.
  • Extension 2: the most demanding course, with complex numbers, mechanics, harder integration and proof.

Extension courses usually scale well, but only if you do well in them. A strong Band 6 in Advanced can be worth more than a weak result in Extension 1.

Where students lose marks

  1. 1Calculus setup: applications of differentiation and integration (rates, areas, optimisation) where the maths is fine but the setup is wrong.
  2. 2Trigonometry: radians, exact values and graph transformations under time pressure.
  3. 3Exponentials and logs: log laws and solving equations, which feed straight into calculus.
  4. 4Statistics: normal distribution and probability questions that need clear working.
  5. 5The last questions on the paper: long, multi-part problems where one early slip costs several marks.

A plan for Year 12

  • Terms 1 and 2: secure each topic as it's taught and treat every assessment task as part of your final mark.
  • Term 3: trial exams. Your trial result feeds your school assessment, so prepare for it like the real exam.
  • Term 4: full HSC past papers under timed conditions, then fix every error you find.
