NCEA works differently from most school qualifications. Instead of one big exam per subject, students collect credits throughout the year. This guide explains how it works and how to move grades from Achieved to Merit and Excellence.

How NCEA works

  • Each subject is split into achievement standards worth a set number of credits.
  • Internal standards are assessed at school during the year. External standards are assessed in NZQA exams at the end of the year.
  • Each standard is graded Not Achieved, Achieved, Merit or Excellence.
  • There are three levels, usually taken in Years 11, 12 and 13.

Endorsements

  • Certificate endorsement: 50 credits at Merit or Excellence at that level (or above) earns a Merit or Excellence endorsement on the whole certificate.
  • Course endorsement: 14 credits at Merit or Excellence in one subject in a year, usually including at least 3 internal and 3 external credits.

Endorsements show universities and scholarship panels that a student is consistently strong, not just passing.

University Entrance

To get University Entrance (UE), students need NCEA Level 3, enough credits in approved subjects, and the literacy and numeracy requirements. Competitive degrees then rank applicants on their best Level 3 results, so Merit and Excellence grades matter. Check NZQA and your chosen university for the current rules, as they are being updated.

From Achieved to Merit and Excellence

The difference between grades is rarely about knowing more content. It's about how you use it:

  • Achieved: you can use the right method on a straightforward problem.
  • Merit: you can link ideas, solve less familiar problems and show relational thinking.
  • Excellence: you can handle extended, abstract problems and justify your reasoning clearly.

Level 3 Calculus and Physics

Level 3 Calculus (differentiation, integration and complex numbers) and Physics are where many strong students get stuck at Merit. The Excellence questions usually need a full chain of reasoning: setting up the problem, solving it and explaining why the answer makes sense.
