QCE Maths Methods & Specialist: IAs, the External Exam and Your ATAR

In Queensland, the QCE system combines school-based internal assessments with one external exam per subject. In maths, the external exam carries more weight than in most subjects, so both halves need a plan.

How QCE maths is assessed

  • IA1: a problem-solving and modelling task (PSMT), a written report on a real-world problem.
  • IA2 and IA3: school exams set during Units 3 and 4.
  • External assessment (EA): the QCAA exam at the end of Year 12, usually with a technology-free paper and a technology-active paper.
  • In Maths and Science subjects, the three IAs make up 50% of the result and the EA makes up 50%.

How the ATAR works

QTAC calculates the ATAR from your best five General subjects, or four General subjects plus one Applied subject or VET qualification. You also need a satisfactory result in an English subject to be ATAR-eligible.

Methods vs Specialist vs General

  • General Mathematics: finance, statistics, networks and sequences. Good for students who don't need calculus.
  • Mathematical Methods: calculus, functions and probability. A prerequisite for many science, engineering and commerce degrees.
  • Specialist Mathematics: taken with Methods. Adds vectors, complex numbers, proof, matrices and further calculus.

Where students lose marks

  1. 1IA1: good maths but a weak report. Markers want clear assumptions, a tested model and an honest evaluation.
  2. 2The technology-free paper: algebra and calculus that must be done by hand.
  3. 3Complex unfamiliar questions: problems that don't look like the textbook and need a plan before any working.
  4. 4Probability and statistics setup, especially with continuous distributions.

A plan for Year 12

  • Start IA1 early and get feedback on the draft your school allows.
  • Treat IA2 and IA3 like the external exam: timed, with full working.
  • From Term 3, practise QCAA past external assessments and include technology-free practice every week.
