VCE Maths Methods & Specialist: SACs, Exams and Study Scores

In Victoria, VCE Mathematical Methods is a prerequisite for many university courses, and Specialist Maths is one of the most strongly scaled subjects. This guide explains how VCE maths is assessed and how to prepare.

Study scores and the ATAR

  • Each Unit 3 and 4 study gets a study score out of 50, based on your SACs and the end-of-year exams.
  • SAC marks are moderated against your school's exam results, so the exams also decide how much your SACs are worth.
  • VTAC scales study scores and builds your ATAR from your top four (including an English study) plus 10% of your fifth and sixth.

Methods vs Specialist vs General

  • General Mathematics: data analysis, recursion, matrices and networks. Good for students who don't need calculus.
  • Mathematical Methods: functions, calculus and probability. A prerequisite for most science, engineering and commerce courses.
  • Specialist Mathematics: taken with Methods. Adds complex numbers, vectors, differential equations, kinematics and proof.

The two Methods exams

  • Exam 1 is technology-free: no CAS calculator. Algebra, calculus and exact values must be done by hand.
  • Exam 2 allows CAS and includes multiple-choice and extended-response questions.

Many students lean on CAS all year and then lose easy marks in Exam 1. Regular practice without the calculator is the simplest fix.

Where students lose marks

  1. 1By-hand algebra and exact values in Exam 1.
  2. 2Function transformations and inverse functions.
  3. 3Setting up probability questions with continuous random variables.
  4. 4Explaining reasoning clearly in extended-response questions.
  5. 5SACs: rushing a modelling or problem-solving task that counts towards the final score.

A plan for Year 12

  • Treat every SAC like an exam, because your rank in the cohort carries through.
  • Do some technology-free practice every week.
  • From Term 3, work through full VCAA past exams under timed conditions and read the examiners' reports.
