What relocating families need to know
In the UK, your child’s school automatically enters them for GCSEs and A-Levels. When you move to the UAEand they’re not at a school that does this — or you’re between schools or home-educating — they become a private (external) candidate. That means youarrange the exams: choosing a board, registering through an exam centre, and preparing to the right specification. It’s very common here — and completely manageable once you know the steps.
How to register as a private candidate

1. Choose the right exam board
Private candidates almost always sit the international boards — Cambridge International (CAIE) and Pearson Edexcel International (IGCSE / International A-Level). These are designed to be sat without a school and are equally recognised by universities worldwide. UK-domestic AQA and OCR are generally not open to overseas private candidates, and coursework-heavy subjects are hard to sit privately.
2. Find your exam centre
In the UAE the British Council is the main exam centre for private candidates, with centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Some private schools also accept external candidates — but capacity is limited and not guaranteed, so the British Council is the reliable route.
3. Check the series and deadlines
Exams run in fixed series — typically Oct/Nov and May/June (with Jan sittings for some Edexcel and OxfordAQA subjects). Registration opens months ahead and closes on a fixed deadline, after which a late-entry fee applies. Miss the window and your child waits for the next series — so this is the step to get right early.
4. Register and pay
You register directly with the British Council (online or via their exams team) and pay per subject. Have your child's passport or Emirates ID ready. Bring an NOC (No Objection Certificate) if your child is leaving a school mid-year. You choose the exact syllabus code for each subject — this matters for sciences (see below).
5. Handle the science practicals
Private candidates usually can't complete school-assessed practicals, so for Physics, Chemistry and Biology you pick a syllabus with an 'Alternative to Practical' written paper instead. Confirm the correct syllabus code when you register so your child sits the right papers.
6. Prepare with the right specification
