UCAT tutoring questions
What is the UCAT and who needs it?
UCAT stands for the University Clinical Aptitude Test. It is a computer-based aptitude test used by more than 40 UK medical and dental schools as part of admissions, and it is sat at Pearson VUE test centres. You must sit it in the same year as your UCAS application — scores do not carry over to the next cycle. Always check your specific course page, as requirements differ between universities.
What is the format of the UCAT?
The UCAT has four separately timed subtests taken in a fixed order: Verbal Reasoning (44 questions, 22 minutes), Decision Making (35 questions, 37 minutes), Quantitative Reasoning (36 questions, 26 minutes) and the Situational Judgement Test (69 questions, 26 minutes). That is 184 questions in just under two hours, with a short instruction screen before each subtest and no proper break. A simple on-screen calculator is available in Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning. Abstract Reasoning was removed from 2025 onwards — if a revision book still includes shape-pattern questions, it is out of date.
How is the UCAT scored?
Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning are each scored from 300 to 900, giving a total cognitive score out of 2700. The Situational Judgement Test is reported separately as Band 1 (strongest) to Band 4 and does not add to the 2700. There is no negative marking, so never leave a question blank.
What is a good UCAT score?
The 2025 cohort averaged around 1891. Competitive applicants to the most selective schools generally sit well above that, with a Band 1 or Band 2 on the SJT alongside. Because the test is scaled each year, percentiles matter more than the raw number — we work to a target score set against your shortlist, not a generic benchmark.
When is the UCAT sat and when should I start?
The testing window runs across the summer to late September, with registration opening in the spring and booking from late June. You sit it in the summer between Year 12 and Year 13, ahead of the mid-October UCAS deadline for medicine and dentistry. Most students prepare over 8–12 weeks, so starting in the spring gives you room to build technique before you move into full timed mocks. Starting earlier is the single biggest advantage you can give yourself.

Can I prepare for the UCAT from outside the UK?
Yes. All our lessons are online and we work with students in 53+ countries, including large numbers of families across the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar applying to UK medicine. Pearson VUE test centres operate internationally — book early, as slots outside the UK are limited. Applying in Australia or New Zealand? The UCAT ANZ uses the same subtests with slightly different timings, and we prepare students for that too.
