In short

The UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) runs the Junior (Years 7–8), Intermediate (Years 9–11) and Senior (Years 12–13) Maths Challenges, multiple-choice papers with no calculator. High scorers are invited to follow-on rounds: the Kangaroos and the Olympiads, up to the British Mathematical Olympiad. Beyond Tutors offers one-to-one online preparation, starting with a free 12-question readiness diagnostic.

Why it matters

More than a certificate

It's a different kind of maths

Challenge questions reward spotting patterns and thinking flexibly, not following a set method. Strong students at school often find them unfamiliar at first, and these skills can be taught.

It stands out

Gold certificates and Kangaroo or Olympiad invitations are recognised achievements that can give a personal statement real substance.

It's the skill universities test

TMUA, MAT and Oxbridge interviews reward the same problem-solving. A student who starts UKMT in Year 9 finds Year 13 admissions tests far less daunting.

The pathway

Which competition, in which year?

Each Challenge leads to invitation-only follow-on rounds for the top scorers.

Years 7–8

Junior Maths Challenge (JMC)

Then: Junior Kangaroo · Junior Mathematical Olympiad

A Gold certificate and a follow-on invitation.

Years 9–11

Intermediate Maths Challenge (IMC)

Then: Grey / Pink Kangaroo · Cayley, Hamilton and Maclaurin Olympiads

An Olympiad invitation, and confidence writing full solutions.

Years 12–13

Senior Maths Challenge (SMC)

Then: Senior Kangaroo · British Mathematical Olympiad (BMO1, BMO2)

BMO entry, alongside TMUA, MAT and Oxbridge interview preparation.

How it works

Diagnose first, then prepare

  1. 1

Free readiness diagnostic · about 35 minutes

12 original Challenge-style questions across number & algebra, geometry and logic & counting. No calculator. Your child records their answer, time and confidence for each one.

  2. 2

    Free 30-minute review · online

A tutor goes through the answers with your child, especially the ones they were sure of but got wrong. Those point to the misconceptions that cost the most marks.

  3. 3

A plan up to the competition · weekly

One-to-one sessions that focus on the weakest strand first, then timed practice on full papers, and for Olympiad candidates, writing complete solutions.

FAQ

Questions parents ask us

Is UKMT only for 'gifted' students?

No. If your child enjoys puzzles and is comfortable with school maths, they're ready to start. The diagnostic tells us where they are, and many students improve quickly once they learn the common Challenge techniques.

Are these official UKMT questions?

No. The diagnostic uses our own original questions in Challenge style. Students are entered for the real competitions through their school or an approved centre; we prepare them. Beyond Tutors is not affiliated with the UK Mathematics Trust.

My child's school doesn't enter UKMT. Can they still take part?

Often, yes. UKMT has arrangements for students whose school doesn't enter them, and students outside the UK can take part through international entry. Check the current rules on ukmt.org.uk, and we can help you work out the route.

How is Olympiad preparation different from Challenge preparation?

The Challenges are multiple-choice; the Olympiad papers ask for full written solutions. That means learning to prove, justify and present an argument clearly, which is also excellent preparation for MAT and Oxbridge interviews.

Are lessons online?

Yes. Lessons are live, one-to-one and online, with after-school, evening and weekend slots in UK time. We also teach students in the Gulf, Europe and Asia.
