How to Apply to US Universities from Abroad

Applying to US universities from outside the US can feel opaque — a different system, unfamiliar terms, and a lot of moving parts. But it follows a clear shape once you understand it. Here's how it works and how to plan it well.

US admissions is holistic

Unlike systems that admit on grades alone, US universities read the whole student — academics, test scores, essays, activities and recommendations — and weigh how it fits together. That's an opportunity: a thoughtful, well-rounded application can genuinely stand out.

The Common Application

Most US universities use the Common App — one core application (your profile, activities list and a personal statement) plus school-specific supplements. You complete it once and send it to multiple universities, adding each school's extra questions.

Tests: SAT and APs

Testing policies vary and have been shifting — some universities are test-optional while others have reinstated the SAT. A strong SAT score almost always helps, especially for competitive schools and merit scholarships. Strong AP scores add further evidence of college-level ability. Plan your testing around your target schools' requirements.

The essays

The personal statement (around 650 words) and supplemental essays are where your child's voice comes through. Universities check for authenticity — so the essays must be genuinely the student's own. Good support means coaching the brainstorming, structure and drafting, never writing it for them.

Deadlines and the timeline

• Early Decision / Early Action deadlines are often around 1 November.
• Regular Decision deadlines are often around 1 January.
• Draft the personal statement the summer before the final year — the highest-leverage window.
