It is held twice a year, in June and November, in Japan and in several other countries. Mathematics and Science can be answered in English or Japanese, and Mathematics comes in Course 1 (for humanities and some science programmes) and Course 2 (for most science and engineering programmes). Our one-to-one online EJU tutoring starts from ¥4,500 per hour, after a free trial lesson.

EJU explained

How the EJU works

Universities each set which EJU subjects they need, so we start by checking the requirements for the programmes on your list.

  • The EJU is administered by JASSO, the Japan Student Services Organization.
  • It runs twice a year, in June and November, in Japan and in selected cities overseas.
  • Mathematics and Science can be taken in English or Japanese; Japanese as a Foreign Language is taken in Japanese.
  • Mathematics is split into Course 1 and Course 2. Science candidates choose two of Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
  • All answers are on a mark sheet, so speed and accuracy matter as much as method.
  • Each university decides which subjects and which maths course it requires, so check every programme before you register.

FAQ

EJU tutoring questions

Do you tutor the EJU in English?

Yes. We teach EJU Mathematics (Course 1 and 2) and Science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) in English. All lessons are live, one-to-one and online.

Do you teach Japanese as a Foreign Language for the EJU?

No. We don't currently teach the Japanese as a Foreign Language paper or Japan and the World. Many students pair our Maths and Science tutoring with a Japanese-language school.

Should I take Mathematics Course 1 or Course 2?

It depends on the programme. Most science and engineering programmes require Course 2; many humanities and social-science programmes use Course 1. We check each university's requirements with you.

When should I start preparing?

Ideally three to six months before the June or November sitting, so there is time to cover gaps and do timed past-paper practice.

How much does an EJU tutor cost?

Lessons start from ¥4,500 per hour, with the plan tailored after a free trial lesson. There's no payment for the trial.
