In short

Several Japanese universities run full undergraduate degrees taught in English, and they admit students through their own applications rather than the Japanese national entrance exams. Requirements differ by programme but usually include school results or IB/A-Level grades, standardised test scores such as the SAT, an English-language score, personal essays and sometimes an interview. Our one-to-one Japan admissions support starts from ¥6,000 per hour, after a free trial lesson.

Japan university admissions explained

How applications work

Each programme runs its own admissions, so we build one plan around the requirements and deadlines on your list.

Applying to the UK or US as well? See UK admissions tests and US admissions.
  • English-taught programmes admit students through their own applications, separate from the Japanese national entrance exams.
  • Most ask for school or IB/A-Level grades, an English-language score and one or more essays.
  • Many accept or require SAT or ACT scores; some science programmes also accept EJU results.
  • Some programmes interview shortlisted applicants, often online.
  • Several programmes run more than one application round a year, so deadlines vary.
  • We confirm the current requirements on each university's admissions page before planning.
